Celebrating Reconciliation Week with Wiradjuri Echoes

By Mrs Caroline Suthers, Junior School Music Specialist

In celebration and recognition of Reconciliation Week, the Junior School had the privilege of welcoming Duncan and Jakida Smith from Wiradjuri Echoes to the College. This special event was attended by all students from Kindergarten to Year 6, creating an atmosphere filled with excitement and curiosity.

Duncan and Jakida, renowned for their engaging and educational presentations, generously shared their Wiradjuri culture with our students. Students engaged in Aboriginal music, dance, artefacts, culture, art, traditions and stories.

One of the highlights from the incursion was the interactive telling of several Dreamtime stories. Duncan and Jakida brought the story to life with vivid storytelling, inviting students to participate and engage with the tale. This approach not only made the learning process enjoyable but also helped the students develop a deeper understanding of Aboriginal culture. We were also fortunate to view Duncan’s artistic talents, watching him create a visual representation of the Dreamtime stories he shared.

Another exciting part of the day was when students learned some traditional Aboriginal dances. Under Jakida’s enthusiastic guidance, they learned how to choreograph the dance, while Duncan accompanied them with a variety of Indigenous instruments. This interactive dance session was not only fun but a great way for students to connect with the physical and artistic aspects of Wiradjuri culture.

The visit from Wiradjuri Echoes was a poignant reminder of the importance of cultural diversity and respect. It provided a meaningful opportunity for students to learn about and reflect on the significance of Reconciliation Week. As we look forward to continuing our commitment to Aboriginal cultural learning, we are grateful for experiences like these that enrich our educational journey and foster a sense of unity and respect within the College.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Wiradjuri Echoes for their incredible contribution and look forward to more opportunities to work and learn together.
