Hispanic Day 2024

Hispanic Day 2024

By Mrs Sophie Manoharan, Specialist Teacher

Hispanic Day strengthens our relationship with Spanish speaking embassies and provides our students with a fun way to connect with the Spanish culture and language. Hispanic Day 2024 was no exception and featured a lively festival showcasing the rich heritage of ten embassies. Sessions of Latin dance, led by Becky Fleming, owner of Kokoloco dance studio in Canberra, and traditional games like El Tejo, organised by Señor César Alvarez from Colombia, have been a wonderful addition to this year’s celebration.

The day started with members of the College Executives, Spanish staff and Year 6 students gathering in the Collegians Centre to welcome the ten embassies, a Colombian parent and the owner of the Kokoloco dance studio. In appreciation for their cultural contributions, the entire primary school united in song, echoing Un mundo verde by Mister G.

The decorations in the foyer of the Radford College Junior school set the tone with the Amazon’s lush greeneries as well as the 21 Hispanic flags. Embracing this year environment theme, the students adorned themselves in green, symbolising their commitment to creating a sustainable world.

Following the ceremony, students from Year 3 to Year 6 engaged in two sets of 30-minute activities in the Junior space, while Kindergarten to Year 2 students participated in dance and traditional games. Across all age groups, Spanish language exposure took various forms – games, traditional dance, art and percussion – fostering interactions with the participants.

Thanks to the enthusiastic participation of representatives from Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, El Salvador, Spain and Uruguay, as well as the dynamic energy of Becky from Kokoloco and Señor Alvarez from Colombia, Hispanic Day 2024 has once again been a resounding success.

Special mention goes to the Radford College Canteen for spicing up the festivities with a Hispanic-themed menu. Thank you to the dedicated staff, Specialist team and Facilities team whose unwavering support and flexibility made the day truly exceptional.

We hope that our students carried home a kaleidoscope of colours, words, games and knowledge, enriching their understanding of Hispanic culture. Until we meet again in 2025 - ¡ Hasta el próximo año! (See you next year!).
