Radford Football – a season of success

By Ian Worthington, Radford Sport Program Manager, Football

At the beginning of Term 2, Radford Football had 18 boys teams and 6 girls teams in the Junior League Competition, along with our U13s, U14s, U16s and U18s NPLY2 teams, all eager to take to the pitches to kick off the 2021 Winter Football Competition.

It was an outstanding season, with some hard-fought matches, some nail-biting wins and, most importantly, a significant amount of learning, skill development and personal growth taking place. It is also great to see that our women's football program is going from strength to strength and there are some strong participation signposts for the future.

Earlier this week, Capital Football announced the decision to finish the season due to the extended ACT and regional NSW lockdowns. As you can appreciate, this was a difficult decision to make, knowing the time and effort invested by players, coaches, volunteers, referees and families.

Radford College is extremely proud of all student-athletes who have competed in the 2021 Football Competition, and the conclusion of the season brings some exciting results for our Football program.

NPLY2

Little over a year ago Radford Football was placed into the newly formed Capital Football National Premier League 2 (NPL2) competition, despite already establishing a foothold in NPL1.

This year Radford Football has shown dignity, resilience and commitment to work together to stabilise what is quickly being considered the strongest program across the ACT.

The Under 14s, 16s and 18s have officially won their respective competitions, with the Under 13s finishing runners up.

As a collective result, this means that Radford College has been announced as the NPL2 Club Champions, scoring more points than any other club in NPL2 in 2021. In addition to the NPL2 Champion, there will also be an NPL1 Club Champion.

Club promotion and relegation will be applied from the 2021 to 2022 season for NPL1/NPL2 competitions.

It has been amazing to see all teams grow and develop throughout the season.

Junior League

The success and accolades do continue with the U13 Open Division 2 boys being crowned premiers in their respective competition.

Our U12 Open Division 3 team has been awarded runners up, along with the U18 Open Division 3 Glory team.

Over the coming weeks, Capital Football will finalise all division ladders and release the official end-of-season results.

While not the most ideal way to finish the season, we would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all student-athletes who have competed in the Radford Football Program in 2021. The coaches, managers and supporters have also been a credit to the school and we cannot wait to progress to the 2022 season.
