Unique French excursion

Unique French excursion

By Ms Rhiannon Richards, French language teacher

At the start of Term 2, the Year 9 French classes set off for the Pétanque pistes in Weston Park, to enjoy the cultural side of their French studies. A "piste" is the rough gravel surface on which the game of Pétanque is played. We were hosted by the Canberra Pétanque Club, who shared their expertise in the rules of the game, along with some hints and tips.

Petanque, pronounced as "paytonk", is a target sport, where participants throw metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet or jack while standing inside a circle with both feet on the ground.

Our students thoroughly enjoyed their games against each other, as well as the enthusiasm and encouragement of the Canberra Pétanque Club members. We would like to extend our warmest thanks to the volunteers who gave their time so generously.

Conversations suggest that our students would love to return, perhaps with other friends and family members.
